Abstract

Students’ difficulties in generating ideas and organizing information into coherent descriptive texts indicate the need for concrete learning stimuli. This study examined the use of YouTube as a supporting medium in descriptive text writing instruction for 27 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 03 Samaturu. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. Data were collected through writing tasks, classroom observations, and documentation. Selected videos from the TRANS7 OFFICIAL YouTube channel were downloaded beforehand and displayed offline because of limited internet access at the school. The results showed that 3 students (11.11%) achieved the minimum mastery criterion of 75 in the pretest, while 25 students (92.59%) achieved it in the posttest. Improvements were also observed in generating ideas, developing details, and organizing texts. However, two students remained below the mastery criterion, indicating that YouTube should be used with teacher guidance and continued writing support.
